This is a milkshake you are likely to encounter in your local Dairy Queen in Kansas, featuring as it does some rather unusual ingredients.
In fact when I ordered, the waiter was not satisfied until he pointed at the photo in the menu and obtained my consent before writing it down in his notebook. Seems like the tourists usually go for Strawberry or Vanilla.
"So what's in this mysterious drink?", I hear you mumble politely.
Well it's milk mainly - generally coconut milk - along with palm sugar and crushed ice. Those green things you see in the picture are grass jelly strips which are popular additions to a variety of drinks and desserts in these parts. Gives a bit of texture to a drink. So that's fair enough so far. What puts people off are the other more... 'savoury' options. The reddish things you can see there are red kidney beans, which are not commonly discovered floating round western style shakes. And neither is the creamed corn you can see hiding behind the spoon in the photo.
But the most surprising thing of all is that it tastes really good.
